grant Research Project: Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation Microbiome Initiative
The Microbiome Initiative studies the precise mechanisms by which intestinal microbiota are involved in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Comprised of the millions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi that inhabit the human body, primarily in our gut, our microbiome is known to be a key link between genetic susceptibility and the onset and progression of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Uncovering the different functions and interactions of these organisms, however, is extremely difficult: the human microbiome is complex, varies from person to person, and can change over an individual’s lifetime.
Specially, the Microbiome Initiative works to address gaps in the understanding of the mechanisms underlying the pathological processes leading to the onset, exacerbation, and relapse in IBD and tremendous progress has been made in doing just this. The chief desired outcome of the Microbiome Initiative is to continue to identify the role that the microbiome plays in IBD. Moving forward a primary focus will be on the characterization of the metabolites to identify causative and protective functions of the metabolites that have been linked to IBD, and to assess their therapeutic potential. The idea is to generate in the next three years a pool of information that can attract industry interest.
